Triplet Brothers

Logic/Logic002.jpg
There are 3 triplet brothers. They look identical. The oldest is John, he always tells the truth. The second is Jack, he always tells a lie. The third is Joe, he either tells the truth or a lie.

Jimmie Dean went to visit them one day. He was wondering who was who. So he asked each person a question.

He asked the one who was sitting on the left: "Who is the guy sitting in the middle?". The answer was "He is John."
He asked the one who was sitting in the middle: "What is your name?". The answer was "I am Joe."
He asked the one who was sitting on the right: "What is the guy sitting in the middle?". The answer was "He is Jack."

Jimmie Dean got really confused. Basically, he asked 3 same questions, but he got 3 different answers. Would you find out who is who for Jimmie?

Puzzle SolutionSince John always tells the truth, we can find him first by false logic.

If the one sitting on the left were John, he would not say (when asked who the guy in the middle was), "He is John". So he can not be John.

If the one in the middle is John, he should say "I am John" (not, I am Joe). So he can not be John.

John is therefore the one on the right. His statement was true. Therefore the middle one is Jack. That leaves Joe on the left

  Life door or Death door

Logic/Logic003.jpg
There is a prisoner who is about to be executed. The king decides to give him one last chance to live.

There are 2 doors, the life door and the death door. There is one guard standing by each door. Those two guards know which door is the life door and which is the death door. However, one of them always tells the truth and the other always tells a lie. There is no way you can identify which door is the life door or the death door. There is no way you can distinguish who is the one telling the truth.

The prisoner can only ask one guard one question. Then he needs to choose a door to walk in. If he walks in the death door, then he will be executed. If he walks in the life door, he can have a new life.

He did choose the life door and lived. What was the question he asked? How did he choose the door after he got the answer from one of the guards?
Puzzle Solution

Assume the guard A is by door A and guard is by door B. Let the prisoner go to guard A and ask him the question. One of the typical question is: "If I ask guard B what door is door B, the answer from guard B will be life door or death door?"If the answer is life door (door B), he can walk in the door A safely. If the answer is death door(door B), he can choose the door B and walk inThis is because the question goes through 2 levels of questions from 2 people. The overall answers will be always a lie because there is always one lying and the other telling the truth. He can always choose the other door to the answer

Boxes of Apples and OrangesLogic/Logic004.jpg

All 3 boxes with labels are COMPLETELY mislabeled. You will be allowed to take only one piece of fruit from one of the boxes to examine it. Which box would you choose? How do you correctly re-label all three boxes?
Puzzle SolutionThis puzzle is very simple if you list out all the cases. Remember that ALL the boxes are wrongly labeled.
1. Orange box (box 1) can have apples or "apples and oranges".
2. Apple box (box 2) can have oranges or "apples and oranges".
3. Mixed box (box 3) can have either apples or oranges but not both.

Let us try the orange box (box 1) first. If you are lucky, you pick up an orange, so you can be sure you also have an apple in the box (mixed). In this case the problem is solved. Unfortunately, you have only a 25% chance of getting an orange. If you pick up an apple instead, you can not tell if there may also be oranges in the box.

If you select the Apple box (box 2), it will be the same as selecting the orange box.

The only choice is to select from the box labeled "mixed" (box 3).

We know it is mislabeled so that it CANNOT contain mixed fruit. If you pick up an orange, then you know that the box labeled "apples" must contain the mixed fruits. (If it had just apples in it, it would not be mislabeled!) The orange box can have apples only.

If you pick up an apple , the apple box can have oranges only. The orange box will then be the mixed fruit

Did he tell the truth?
Logic/Logic005.jpg
Jimmie Dean visited an island. There were 2 tribes living on this island. The east tribal people always tell a lie. The west tribal people always tell the truth.

Jimmie Dean saw a guy passing him. He asked the tour guide to ask that guy where he lives. The tour guide asked the guy and came back with the answer: he lives over west. Did the tour guide tell the truth or tell a lie?

Puzzle SolutionIf the guy was from the west, he should answer the truth: I am from the west.

If the guy was from the east, he also should tell a lie: I am from the west.

The answer will always be: I am from the west. So we know the tour guide was telling the truth

What are the next 2 numbers?

Number 53 is derived from 72. 34 is derived from 53. 25 is derived from 34. What are the next 2 numbers in the sequence?

Puzzle Solution7 x 7 + 2 x 2 = 53, 5 x 5 + 3 x 3 = 34, 3 x 3 + 4 x 4 = 25.

The next tow numbers are 2 x 2 + 5 x 5 = 29, 2 x 2 + 9 x 9 = 85
